Building the First Plastic Recycling Centre for a United Nations Peacekeeping Mission

2023 - 2026

The Polyfloss Factory partnered with Mad Plastic to design and install the first plastic recycling centre for a UN peacekeeping mission, commissioned by UNISFA and supported by UNGSC ETSU/REACT.

Deployed to Abyei, a disputed territory on the border between Sudan and South Sudan, the project established a full waste-to-resource cycle inside the UNISFA compound: plastic collection, sorting, cleaning, shredding, pressing, injection, extrusion and fiberizing. The workshop was designed to be fully operable and maintainable by the UNISFA teams on the ground. In Abyei, Polyfloss fibers were applied to produce oil spill catchers, a context-specific response to a real operational need within the mission.

With thanks to UNISFA and UNGSC ETSU/REACT for their trust in our innovations, and to Engineers Without Borders Norway and Innovation Norway for their ongoing support in making this project possible.
